John Starling and Carolina Star
Rebel

This is one of the purest, cleanest-sounding, live-in-the-studio progressive bluegrass albums ever recorded, and it couldn’t have been made by a finer group of musicians: Starling (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and his Seldom Scene cohorts Mike Auldridge (resophonic guitar) and Tom Gray (bass).

Not progressive bluegrass in the sense of New Grass Revival, Leftover Salmon or Yonder Mountain String Band, but in the sense of nontraditional instrumentation and arrangements played with more of a laid-back high lonesome sound.

And of course, what would such an album be like without a couple of instrumentals, namely the mandolin-fiddle workout “South Riding Tango” and Ricky Skaggs’ “Irish Spring.”

Produced by uberengineer George Massenburg, the songs run the gamut from Jimmie Rodgers to Gram Parsons to Lowell George to Gillian Welch. Special guests include Emmylou Harris, Jon Randall and Jimmy Gaudreau.
