My Name Is Buddy
Ry Cooder
Nonesuch/Perro Verde

Could two solo studio albums in a row mean that Cooder has returned to a solo career, after an 18-year detour into movie soundtracks and world music collaborations? If so, it’s a welcome return.

“Buddy” revisits the American roots music found on Cooder’s first four solo records, and as such differs from his 2005 Latino-themed solo comeback, “Chavez Ravine” (though a couple of Tex-Mex tunes are included). And whereas that record relied heavily on guest singers and non-Cooder compositions, here he writes most of the songs and sings lead on all but one. Not to mention he includes a more-generous helping of his trademark slide guitar.

So it’s an old-fashioned Ry Cooder album with a new twist: Like its predecessor, it’s a concept album, only this time about the vanishing American working man – embodied by its protagonist, a vagabond red feline. On hand to help relate this tale are longtime musical companions Jim Keltner, Van Dyke Parks and Flaco Jimenez. as well as banjoists Mike and Pete Seeger, mandolinist Roland White and the Chieftains’ Paddy Maloney.
