Sean O’Hagan & Co. continue to refine their answer to the question, “What would a collaboration between Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach and Donald Fagan sound like (with a little Brazilian pop and shades of gospel/R&B thrown in)?”

Their 2007 answer is one in which electronica stylings have been abandoned in favor of good ol’ piano, electric piano and organ, atop a bed of mostly acoustic guitar, electric bass and a rich assortment of percussion, adorned with a thick layer of strings (special emphasis on harp) and some of the smoothest female background vocals this side of the 1960s.

From the opening track’s Farfisa riffs, to “Honeytrop’s” walking bass lines and cool vibe accents, to the “Feel Flows”-style Fender Rhodes on “Cove Cutter (Hills and Fields)” and the unadulterated giddiness of “Rollin’,” this is one sunshiny blast of avant-pop.

And just to clarify the album title’s meaning for those scratching their heads: Can cladder is a term coined by O’Hagan for the American aluminum siding salesmen who used to ply their wares in Irish seaport towns during the ’60s, as revealed in a review published at Web site Junk Media.
