Brian Setzer

Give this man his own variety show! That’s right, like back in the ’60s on TV. You know, Dean Martin-, Smothers Brothers-, Johnny Cash- and Glen Campbell-style.

Pigeonholed as Mr. Rockabilly, the former Stray Cat has tried to break free of that label, interspersing his solo output with six albums by the big-band Brian Setzer Orchestra. Now the guitarist/singer/songwriter adds musicologist to his resume, with this baker’s dozen of originals spanning a variety of styles linked only by his incendiary riffing.

The sound is hard, loud and no-frills. The studio used was a big, open, wooden room, for a live feel. Setzer ran his Gretsch through a Fender Bassman and Supro amp, to bring out the bottom end. And the Space Echo was left behind.

“13” began as a five-song EP in trio format, consisting of previously written material Setzer deemed inappropriate for whatever album he’d been working on. It ended up a long-player with a fuller sound when additional songs were written and more musicians were brought in.

Throwing together a collection of songs in different styles is always risky business, but for Mr. Rockabilly, the result is a perfectly balanced grab bag that will have people seeing him in a different light.
