Grayson Capps
Hyena

Capps was born and raised in Alabama and then moved to New Orleans to study theater at Tulane University. He stayed for 20 years, eking out a living as a landscaper while playing in the House Levellers and later Stavin’ Chain. After Hurricane Katrina sent him packing, he did a seven-month stretch on the road with his band The Stumpknockers, before resettling in Franklin, Tenn.

Now, with his sophomore album out and national exposure from writing and performing songs and music for the 2004 film “A Love Song for Bobby Long” (based on his father’s previously unpublished novel), Capps is finally getting some well-deserved recognition.

His rough-hewn, slide-driven, roots-rock tales of Big Easy hookers and broken-down alcoholics comprise a smooth Southern sound distilled from all the places he’s lived. From the lovelorn honky-tonk patron of “Jukebox” to the girl-watchin’ wolf of “Give It to Me” to the narrator of “Broomy,” who wants to pay someone $5 to “sweep my tracks away,” Capps spins tales of the poor and downtrodden that are more entertaining than most movies nowadays.
