From the label that issued the six-CD gospel box set “Goodbye, Babylon” comes another collection of magnificently restored 78s, this time a three-disc compilation shining the spotlight on the string bass.
Predominantly jazz, the collection also touches on Hawaiian music, Latin, calypso, Western swing, country, jug band, gospel and blues. The nearly noise-free recordings allow the listener to travel through time, enjoying one bass solo after another as if in the same room with the musicians.
Label founder Lance Ledbetter spent years combing collectors’ holdings to find the cream of the crop. An accompanying 96-page book includes the lowdown for each track, as well as essays and historic articles.
But the real star is the track selection: Besides familiar songs/artists, there are tunes and musicians many people have never heard. By digitizing and preserving this material, Ledbetter has done a valuable and much-appreciated service for this and future generations.
