Under the Skin
Lindsey Buckingham
Reprise

It’s good to have Buckingham the Solo Artist back after almost 15 years. His own albums have always been better than his work with Fleetwood Mac.

The phrase “avant-garde pop” is not an oxymoron when used to describe the music he’s come to excel at: beautiful, meticulously crafted songs with slightly edgy arrangements and wonderfully offbeat melodies.

His vocals have taken on an otherworldly sound. His fingerpicking has never been more in the foreground than on this acoustic collection, on which he plays all the instruments except for a cameo or two by old bandmates John McVie and Mick Fleetwood and orchestration on one song.

Two ’60s covers – the Rolling Stones’ “I Am Waiting” and Donovan’s “To Try for the Sun” – nicely complement the original material. The Donovan composition, along with “Someone’s Gotta Change Your Mind” and “Down on Rodeo,” were rumored to have been considered for Buckingham’s ultimately unreleased “Gift of Screws” album.
