The Happy Electropop Music Machine
Jean-Jacques Perrey & Dana Countryman
Oglio

Perrey, the grandfather of Moog music whose theme “Baroque Hoedown” has been part of Disneyland’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” for more than 30 years, said in an interview, “My music is always happy and humorous, because I wanted my music to … be understood by children, because all children move under music."

Countryman, the Everett, Wash.-based musician/composer who met the France-based Perrey through Countryman’s defunct Cool and Strange Music magazine, proposed they collaborate on a CD. They sent each other MiniDiscs and communicated via Skype, before convening at Countryman’s studio.

Two years in the making, it’s plainly a labor of love. Imagine old Moog LPs like the Zeet Band’s “Moogie Woogie,” Martin Denny’s “Exotic Moog” and Gil Trythall’s “Country Moog,” only done using the latest technology.

One of HEMM’s unexpected delights: “Troll’s Story,” a suite whose opening movement would undoubtedly bring a smile to Brian Wilson’s face, as it is a kindred spirit to some of the themes used on “Mt. Vernon and Fairway,” the bonus 45 included with the original release of the Beach Boys’ “Holland.”
