Live from Across the Pond
The Robert Cray Band
Nozzle/Vanguard

It’s hard to believe that after 26 years, this is Cray’s first live release. Culled from a one-week stand opening for Eric Clapton at the Royal Albert Hall this year, these two discs embody the blues/soul man’s philosophy of making music.

The song selection, like his lyrics, is subtle yet direct. The obvious hits are eschewed in favor of less-well-known compositions that better reflect Cray’s essence. While a few of his albums are passed over (most notably “Some Rainy Morning”), most are surveyed while managing to include a reasonable amount of recent songs.

His guitar work, as always, is economical and unobtrusive. He puts himself on equal ground with his longtime band, stealthily arriving at solos without overstaying his welcome and wasting no notes in the spotlight.

Finally, the recording is clean and crisp. The editing flows well from track to track, with minimal audience noise. And the mix, by Don Smith (the Rolling Stones’ “Voodoo Lounge,” Ry Cooder’s “Chavez Ravine”), is impeccable.
