Carolina Christmas
The Marshall Tucker Band
Shout! Factory/Ramblin'

These Southern rockers have had more than 20 members over three decades and are still kickin’. Their core ’70s catalog has been reissued twice. And although two of the original members have passed on, lead singer Doug Gray remains.

The personnel changes seem to have settled down, with Chris Hicks and Stuart Swanlund playing lead, slide and rhythm guitars; David Muse on flute and sax; B.B. Borden behind the drums; and newest member Pat Ellwood on bass.

Doing a Christmas record is always nice because there’s no pressure to come up with new material (although there are four new tunes here); but this one is made even better with some of the group’s original members returning to help out: Paul Hornsby, the keyboardist who produced MTB’s first six albums; rhythm guitarist George McCorkle; and sax and flute man Jerry Eubanks.

Among the standout tracks are “White Christmas” (Gray’s voice never sounded better); Hicks’ soulful title track; “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” featuring Eubanks and Hornsby; and the bluesy “Merry Christmas, Baby.”
