Firebird Suite
Michael Perlowin
Perlowin Music

Originally released in 1997 on the Newport Classic label, this groundbreaking first album from Perlowin went out of print and the rights reverted back to the artist, who fortunately has self-reissued it.

The mission statement for “Firebird” was to take the pedal steel guitar into genres other than country. After seven years of multitracking, processing and even old-fashioned techniques such as speeding up the recording, Perlowin emerged from his home studio with an amazing instrumental collection of music by Copland, Gershwin, Bartok, Debussy, Satie, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Mingus.

The result at times is surreal, with the steel guitar taking on theremin and synthesizer qualities. The addition of other string instruments – lap steel, guitar, banjo, mandolin and autoharp, all played by Perlowin – and rhythm accompaniment (supplied mostly by real instruments) gives the whole affair a pseudosymphonic feel.

P.S. Since “Firebird,” Perlowin has interpreted Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” for the pedal steel, and is working on a project of Spanish and Latin music transcribed for the instrument.
