Guitars & Castanets
Patricia Vonne
CoraZong/Bandolera

For only being her sophomore effort, this is muy caliente. Vonne comes blowing in out of the Southwestern desert like a tumbleweed, castanets a-blazin’.

The Austin American-Statesman calls her “a Tex-Mex spitfire with a rock ’n’ roll heart.” She’s got a tight bunch of bandoleros backing her up, with a guest appearance by Charlie Sexton on “Rebel Bride” and a little lap steel by Jon Dee Graham (of lamented Austin cult band True Believers) on “Blood on the Tracks.”

She sings in English and Spanish, and wrote or co-wrote all the songs. Seven were written with her husband, Robert LaRoche of defunct power-pop band The Sighs. The title track was written with her filmmaker brother Robert Rodriguez.

The best thing about it, though, is that silky yet in-your-face voice – sizzling but refreshing, like a desert wind.
