The Austin prodigy’s fourth studio album proper finds the guitarist back on track after 1996’s out-of-step “Venus Isle.”

As usual, the album is divided between instrumental and vocal numbers, with the former having the upper hand by about 2-to-1. Additionally, it’s split into three stylistic sections: Prelude, Courante and Allemande.

Fellow Austinite Shawn Colvin adds vocals to “Your Sweet Eyes.” Adrian Legg solos on “Tribute to Jerry Reed.” The collection runs the gamut, from rock to smooth jazz, new age and fusion. On the five vocal compositions, his voice sounds better than ever.

But what’s impressive is how even the record is, while maintaining its diversity. Perhaps its because it’s been nine years coming, or maybe just a desire to raise the bar. Either way, it’s a bull’s-eye.
