Master of Disaster
John Hiatt
New West

This is Hiatt’s best album in years: no theme, no Goners reunion, just a great collection of songs. He is, after all, the songwriter’s songwriter.

What does tie these songs together is the Dickinsons: legendary Memphis producer Jim and his North Mississippi Allstar sons Luther and Cody (guitar and drums, respectively), who lend a clean and heartfelt sound to the proceedings.

But don’t expect it to sound like the Allstars. The Dickinson brothers are strictly here as sidemen, minus their bandmate Chris Chew, who is replaced for these sessions by veteran Muscle Shoals bassist David Hood.

So get ready to laugh, cry and everything in between, because that’s what Hiatt is all about.
