3: Calcutta Slide-Guitar
Debashish Bhattacharya
Riverboat Records/World Music Network

The “3” in the title refers to the Trinity of Guitars – the 24-string Chaturangui, the 14-string Gandharvi and the four-string Anandi – that Bhattacharya developed to free him of the restrictions of the lap steel used for Indian classical slide guitar.

“3” also stands for the album’s three sections: a prelude played on the Anandi; a two-part evening raga played on the Gandharvi; and a three-part morning raga played on the Chaturangui.

This is undoubtedly some of the most beautiful instrumental acoustic guitar music ever heard – slide, Indian or otherwise. Accompanied by his younger siblings on tabla and tambura, the original compositions are at times slow and peaceful, elsewhere mindnumbingly fast, thanks in part to a three-finger picking method Bhattacharya devised.

Indian music played on nontraditional instruments developed out of love for a Hawaiian style that emulates the human voice. That sums it up nicely.
