Frances the Mute
The Mars Volta
Universal
Thought rock was dead? Think again.
The Mars Volta is giving the long-languishing genre some badly needed CPR. Like Dr. Frankenstein, the MV has pieced together various body parts (hardcore punk, heavy metal, prog and rock en Español) and shocked its creation to life.
To call their style intriguing is an understatement. Initially, the listener may wonder what makes it so … undeniable. Fragments seem vaguely familiar, yet the sound is so intense, self-indulgent and devil-may-care that it’s brand new.
Special effects abound. Songs go on and on. One minute Robert Plant is being channeled, the next it’s as if an alternate-universe Spanish radio station has taken over the speakers. No, wait, aren’t these bootlegged outtakes from some obscure Pink Floyd album?
Maybe. Then again, it might be a concept album based on a diary found in a car by a now-deceased bandmate while working as a repo man. In any event, “Frances the Mute” (would Donald O’Connor get it?) is a wickedly adventurous, seriously demanding and ultimately rewarding experience.
