It’s a meeting of the minds: The Paladins’ Dave Gonzalez teams up with Chris Gaffney of Chris Gaffney and the Cold Hard Facts to create a group exclusive of their respective bands, which apparently have gone on hiatus.

The bros are all about country soul – or as they prefer to call it, western soul – a genre that seems to be rearing its beautiful head (Jesse Dayton’s “Country Soul Brother” is a recent example). Here, however, DG & Gaff put an occasional spaghetti-western spin on things, conjuring images of new home base Arizona.

The pair co-produced four songs with fellow Tucsonian Teddy Morgan; the rest are produced by the legendary Dan Penn, who wrote “The Years That Got Away” specifically for Gaff (who sings 10 songs) and co-wrote “Looking for Loneliness” with DG (who sings two).

Pedal steel fans will be in heaven, as the instrument is a permanent part of the lineup. There are covers of songs by Dallas Frazier, Mel Tillis, Carl Montgomery (of “Six Days on the Road” fame) and Fred Neil, with two original instrumentals thrown in for good measure.
