Endless Road
Tommy Emmanuel
Koch Nashville

Aussie fingerpicker Emmanuel still can’t shake mentor Chet Atkins’ death. On “Endless Road,” four songs have an Atkins connection: “The Man With the Green Thumb” (a tribute to Mr. Guitar); “I Still Can’t Say Goodbye” (a revamping of a father-and-son story made famous by Atkins); “Chet’s Ramble” (a melody Atkins was working on when he and Emmanuel recorded their collaboration CD, “The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World”); and a revamping of John D. Loudermilk’s “Windy and Warm” (the first song Emmanuel heard Atkins play).

Elsewhere on this strictly solo, 100% excellent album are versions of “Mona Lisa,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Wheels” (Norman Petty’s No. 3 hit for the String-A-Longs) and Jerry Reed’s “Today Is Mine.” The rest are Emmanuel originals. All but two are instrumentals.

Need more incentive? Consider these two facts:

1) Todd Rundgren once called Emmanuel “the two best guitarists” he’d ever seen.

2) Atkins, the original “Certified Guitar Player,” has bestowed that designation on only three other people – Jerry Reed, John Knowles and Emmanuel.
