Mississippi Folk Music - Volume One
North Mississippi Allstars
Songs of the South

Recorded in two days and mixed in one at Zebra Ranch (their old man Jim's barn studio in the Mississippi hill country), this is Luther and Cody Dickinson's and Chris Chew's first acoustic album, on their own label. It's representative of what they did on their recent, seven-week Solid Blues Tour with Joe Krown, Charlie Musselwhite and Mavis Staples.

A few of the songs are traditional, a few are original and the rest are covers of Little Walter; Ray Charles; Bob Dylan; Steve Cropper and Eddie Floyd; NMAS' No. 1 mentor, R.L. Burnside; Huddie Ledbetter; their No. 2 mentor, Junior Kimbrough; Mississippi John Hurt; and Joseph Spence. Luther's slide, as always, is outstanding. Many of the tunes feature Cody on guitar, too, since not all have drums. Chew plays upright bass, and the Dickinsons' dad lends occasional piano.

The original "Snakes in My Bushes" blends right in, with its "In My Time of Dying" vibe. The other original composition, "ML," is an instrumental written with Duwayne Burnside (R.L.'s son).

Very much under the radar, "Mississippi Folk Music" is sold only via www.nmallstars.com and at shows.
