Charlie Hunter Trio
Fantasy

Hunter ventures from instrumental jazz to instrumental rock with the 2007 edition of his trio, replacing the saxophonist with a keyboardist. He also dropped the eighth string off his custom Novax and filed the neck down, but it doesn’t affect his simultaneous-guitar-bass sound one iota.

The material for the most part is slightly less avant-garde, with just enough quirkiness and more melody. But there are exceptions: “Estranged” is a straight-ahead ballad; “Balls” is a slowed-down Southern-rock shuffle with a couple of drum solos; “Special Shirt” begins and ends with a groovy harpsichord riff vaguely recalling the “Addams Family” TV score; and the title track is a moderately stretched out jam that sounds like a good old-fashioned but ultradisciplined Grateful Dead “drums and space.”

Erik Deutsch and Simon Lott are the perfect foils for Hunter’s latest direction. Hopefully there will be more albums from this lineup.
