On the Jimmy Reed Highway
Omar Kent Dykes & Jimmie Vaughan
Ruf

The world would be a better place if musicians collaborated on albums more frequently. Atkins and Reed. Townshend and Lane. Santana and McLaughlin. Touré and Cooder. Earle and McCoury. Lauderdale and Hunter. Cale and Clapton.

“Highway” has the added bonus of being a tribute album. And with Dykes’ (sans the Howlers) vocals, it’s like Howlin’ Wolf doing an album of Jimmy Reed covers, bookended unobtrusively by two compositions Dykes wrote with musical parodist Steve Callif.

Vaughan, originally slated to contribute a few solos, had so much fun he stuck around for all but two cuts. Making cameo appearances are Kim Wilson (whose harp playing on three tracks is the first time Vaughan and Wilson have recorded together since Vaughan left the Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1990), Delbert McClinton, James Cotton, Lou Ann Barton and Gary Clark Jr. Among the session musicians are guitarist Derek O’Brien, harmonica player Gary Primich and drummer George Rains (of Sir Douglas Quintet fame).

The selection of compositions ranges from the familiar (a medley of “Baby What You Want Me to Do” and “Bright Lights, Big City”) to the obscure (“Hush Hush” and “Aw Shucks, Hush Your Mouth”).
