Revue
Paul Reddick
Northern Blues Music

"Revue” is a Reddick sampler, drawing from three sources: blues band The Sidemen; solo work; and contributions to the Rhythm & Truth Brass Band. It’s also some of the most original blues from the Great White North in a long time, with a few tracks that have been unavailable for years.

Reddick’s vocals at times are reminiscent of the old Captain (as in Beefheart); at others, they sound like Howlin’ Wolf, literally phoning it in. He’s also an excellent harmonica player, alternately recalling Jim Fitting of sorely missed blues-rock quartet Treat Her Right; Blues Traveler’s John Popper; and “Memphis Charlie” Musselwhite.

Much of “Revue” features old-time country and folk textures via mandolin, slide guitar and New Orleans brass, while emphasizing electro-acoustic arrangements and low-fidelity shadings. The intelligent lyrics feel like poetry, pleasantly contradicting the raw arrangements. And kudos is due Colin Linden for his fine production on many of the tracks.

To modify an old cliché, it’s “something old, something new, something borrowed, something BLUES” – and highly recommended.
