Strange Weirdos
Loudon Wainwright III
Concord

Somewhere along the way, Wainwright’s new album took a detour and ended up as a soundtrack – sort of. He was about to begin work with producer Joe Henry when Judd Apatow heard him play a new song, “Grey in L.A.,” and asked him to record it for his upcoming romantic comedy, “Knocked Up.”

Later, Apatow’s music supervisor heard the song and thought it would make a great score for the film, so Wainwright was asked to record an instrumental version. In England at the time, the singer-songwriter replied, “Would it be all right if Richard Thompson plays on it?”

Wainwright and Henry, at the filmmaker’s urging, then wrote several songs inspired by the movie. With the exception of “Grey in L.A.” and “You Can’t Fail Me Now,” which run over the film’s credits, all were stripped of their vocals and only used for the score. Fortunately, LWIII released the songs in their entirety as “Strange Weirdos,” with the subtitle “Music From and Inspired by the Film ‘Knocked Up.’ ”

It’s his best album in decades. Eight songs were penned by Wainwright, two by Henry and two by Wainwright-Henry, with a Peter Blegvad cover (“Daughter”) and a Mose Allison cover (“Feel So Good”). Thompson plays electric guitar on three songs; Van Dyke Parks contributes piano to one and accordion to three; and the core band includes L.A. session stalwart Greg Leisz on acoustic and electric guitar, lap and pedal steel, Weissenborn, mandolin and mandola.
