In Good We Trust
Harry Manx & Kevin Breit
Stony Plain

This is the second collaboration for the highly esteemed Canadian guitarists, following 2003’s “Jubilee.” Manx has carved out an East-meets-West blues niche. Breit specializes in eclectic instrumental music, releasing solo albums as well as efforts with the groups Sisters Euclid and Folkalarm, and also is an in-demand session player. Both musicians love to slide on the strings.

It’s a guitar lover’s dream, with a cast of thousands – well, OK, 18. Roughly in order of appearance: cigar-box guitar; bazouki; electric tamboura; feedback guitar; National tenor guitar; vibrato guitar; electric slide guitar; lap slide guitar; acoustic guitar; electric guitar; banjo; slide mandocello; National mandolin; Mohan veena; loop electric slide guitar; mandola; National steel guitar; and last but not least, mandolin. Occasionally, a kick drum and/or bass slip in.

The song breakdown: 11 tunes (three by Manx, five by Breit, one by Breit-Manx, one Bruce Springsteen cover and one traditional); four are instrumentals. Manx handles all the lead vocals, his warm baritone getting the job done nicely.

The overall sound is laid-back, with even the uptempo tunes having a certain restraint to them. The recording quality is such that the vibrations of the strings can be heard distinctly. Of course, all of this would be moot if the compositions weren’t of the highest caliber.
