Ben Bowen King
Talking Taco

Ben Bowen King, aka Ben Tavera King, runs a little Texas-based, new-age label called Talking Taco. The label specializes in Latino, traditional Mexican and Native American albums – with Tavera King playing button accordion on many of them. So what’s he doing putting out an album of instrumental blues gospel resophonic guitar music, under a slightly different name?

Because he wanted to, and because he needed to differentiate it from his Latino-oriented output. He’s no Ry Cooder, but he’s filling a void. Outside of the third installment of David Grisman’s “Tone Poem” series, one would be hard-pressed to find an all-instrumental resophonic collection.

Tavera King, a master guitarist and lutenist, got his start with a trio of Tex-Mex albums in the ’80s for Moses Asch’s Folkways label. Follow-ups such as “Desert Dreams” and “Coyote Moon” did well and received critical acclaim.

One of the nice things about this CD is that without consulting the tracklisting, listeners wouldn’t know they were enjoying old spiritual standards – that’s how rearranged the songs are.
