The Road to Escondido
J.J. Cale & Eric Clapton
Reprise

A funny thing happened on “The Road to Escondido”: Clapton got to collaborate with one of his heroes and, in the process, created his finest offering since 1989’s “Journeyman.” And while the original plan may have been for Cale to produce a Clapton album, it ended up being a Cale album with Clapton sittin’ in and then some.

It’s all about Cale’s trademark Oklahoma shuffle that Clapton has emulated since covering “After Midnight” in 1970. Only now, with “Escondido,” he’s enhanced it. The beat chugs along like a steam locomotive, fueled by the slow but steady fire of the two masters’ guitars. Their voices mesh to the point where headphones are needed to distinguish them. And with Cale writing 11 of the compositions, it’s as laid back as can be.

And what songs they are. Some hail from Cale solo albums, such as “Any Way the Wind Blows” (1974’s “Okie”) and “Don’t Cry Sister” (1979’s “5”), but most are new. Rounding the set out are Brownie McGhee’s “Sporting Life Blues”; John Mayer’s co-write with Clapton, “Hard to Thrill”; and Clapton’s “Three Little Girls.”

Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II and Christine Lakeland (Cale’s wife) serve as auxiliary guitarists, making for a situation where sometimes five guitarists play on one song. Other musicians include guitarist Albert Lee on “Dead End Road”; the late Billy Preston, all over the album on mostly Hammond B-3; and Taj Mahal, lending harmonica on a few tunes.
