Believer
Oteil and The Peacemakers
Rattlesby

"Believer” is the third album for Oteil and the Peacemakers, who are the side project of Oteil Burbridge, who is the Allman Brothers’ fifth and current bassist.

Jazz-funk is the order of the day. But so is soul. And gospel. And blues. And rock.

A few of the songs are instrumentals. But even the vocal tracks have long, extended solos and jams. The lyrics are more or less of a spiritual nature. Oteil sings on a few cuts, sounding a little like George Benson. But Paul Henson handles most of the material, and he sounds reminiscent of – Napoleon Murphy Brock! (Remember “Florentine Pogen,” from Frank Zappa’s “One Size Fits All”?)

The band absolutely cooks: guitar, Hammond organ, drums and Oteil’s six-string just crank. Fans of Allmans bandmate Derek Trucks’ “Soul Serenade” disc are guaranteed to become Believers when they hear this.
