The Sights and Sounds of Esquivel
Esquivel
Bar-None

Not a live performance, but an incredible simulation.

Titled after Esquivel’s post-recording-heyday stage show developed in Tahoe and Vegas and later taken around the world, this 1974 session was recorded live in the studio (except for overdubbed applause) with an even-more-pared-down combo that had been contracted for a six-month engagement by the owner of Chicago’s La Margarita restaurant.

Consisting of five musicians, two singers and no overdubs (except the applause), the lineup was a far cry from the keyboardist/composer/arranger/conductor’s once mighty studio conglomerations that had peaked with “Latin-Esque” – the 1962 masterpiece recorded with half the orchestra in one studio and the other half in another to ensure total stereo separation.

Nonetheless, this skeleton crew of an ensemble gamely tackles several Latin numbers, as well as covers of the Billie Holiday classic “Good Morning Heartache,” Earl Hines’ “Rosetta” and George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The only misstep is a forgivable attempt to cover a contemporary hit, “Delta Dawn.”

The rest of the disc is what one would expect: first-rate executions of some of the finest compositions of a genre that more than 10 years later would come to be known as space-age bachelor pad music.
