The Outsider
Rodney Crowell
Columbia

Crowell’s on the outside looking in for “The Outsider.”

The singer-songwriter’s third in a series of introspective, career-remaking releases nearly matches the socio-political intensity of Steve Earle’s “The Revolution Starts … Now.”

Inspired by the writings of Roman-slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, Crowell has passionately crafted a collection of songs defending the basic philosophies by which he lives. Some may say he’s being too hard on the conservative right, but in the end it’s a realistic look at America’s current state of affairs.

“The Obscenity Prayer,” “Don’t Get Me Started,” “Ignorance Is the Enemy” and “We Can’t Turn Back” deal with greed, patriotism, right vs. wrong and existentialism. The album starts out rocking harder than Crowell’s ever rocked, before finishing in a pensive mood.

Along the way some great music is made, with help from the likes of former employer Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Randy Scruggs, Jim Horn, J.D. Souther and Buddy and Julie Miller.
