Countryman
Willie Nelson
Lost Highway

Nelson’s marriage of country and reggae works well, and those who think otherwise – including most critics – simply can’t appreciate the way the Redheaded Stranger makes reggae’s rhythm complement country’s loping gait.

The marriage works best when pedal steel guitar rides high on top of acoustic guitar and the way-out-front bass and drums, as on Johnny and June Carter Cash’s “I’m a Worried Man,” featuring Toots Hibbert. Things get even better when Dobro and harmonica are invited to the party for a pair of countrified Jimmy Cliff tunes: “The Harder They Come” – a song that actually comes pretty easy for Nelson – and “Sitting in Limbo.”

The rest of the disc is made up of reggae-fied country numbers, all taken from Nelson’s canon, including co-writes with Ray Price (“I’ve Just Destroyed the World”) and Hank Cochran (“Undo the Right”).

It’s a refreshing concoction that goes down surprisingly easy, mon.
