The Blasters
Rainman

This is the mighty Downey, Calif.-based Blasters first studio album in 20 years. Gone again is guitarist Dave Alvin, who only rejoined brother Phil and company briefly for a tour a couple of years back. But still in the fold are drummer Jerry Angel, guitarist Keith Wyatt and original bass player John Bazz.

The catalyst for this long-awaited event was a recording class in 1999 at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, where Wyatt teaches guitar. Students are required to record an actual group, and the Blasters were invited. The album was finished at Bruce Witkin’s Garage Studios.

Initially released in the UK last October on the Evangeline label,  the album is another history lesson in American roots music. It’s like going to the world’s best used record shop and being able to listen to anything: Otis Blackwell, Charlie Rich, Bobby Lee Trammell, Earl Forest, Cliff Gleaves, Johnny Paycheck, the Ventures, George Jones and Muddy Waters.

But the real clincher is the one they saved for last, “Fire of Love.” Any album with a Shorty Bacon and His Rhythm Rascals song is a must have.
