Steel Guitar
Speedy West
Sundazed

Not a Speedy West solo reissue, but a 1960 Capitol compilation of the pedal steel guitarist’s 1950s instrumentals with country-jazz guitar wizard Jimmy Bryant.

Anyone owning both volumes of Razor & Tie’s West-Bryant anthology (1995’s “Stratosphere Boogie” and 1999’s Swingin’ on the Strings”) or Bear Family’s 1997 West-Bryant four-CD box set “Flaming Guitars” won’t be interested.

For the novice fan, this single CD provides an affordable introduction, plus the remastering by Bob Irwin is better than on the above-mentioned collections.

West really was the far-out foremost in the field: He took the instrument and used it to make sounds at once imaginative and unimaginable, and they still sound that way today.

This is neither Hawaiian nor country music. This is music from another world. So commence countdown, and get ready to blast off to Planet Speedy.
