Tears for Fears

Released in 1989, “The Seeds of Love” was the last Tears for Fears album with the original duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Orzabal put out two more TFF discs minus Smith (“Elemental” in ’93 and “Raoul and the Kings of Spain” in ’95), which contained some great tunes but simply weren’t as satisfying.
Now, 15 years later, the pair are back with a new one that’s every bit as good if not better than “Seeds.” One could almost go so far as to say it’s the best Beatles album you never heard – in spirit as well as in sound.
But the band that started as a humble ’80s synth pop outfit has expanded their scope, reflecting such diverse influences as the artful rock of 10cc; the marrow-deep melancholy of “Wise After the Event”-era Anthony Phillips; and the magical musical interface that might have happened had Burt Bacharach and Herb Alpert continued to collaborate.
The arrangements couldn’t be any lusher, the sonics any fatter or the vocals any more exquisite. This is, to borrow the second track’s title, the “Closest Thing to Heaven.”
