Had To Cry Today
Joe Bonamassa
Premier Artists

It was only a matter of time until upstate New York child prodigy guitarist Joe Bonamassa came into his own. Having explored everything from blues to boogie to Southern rock to jazz – and all between the ages of 4 and 27 – he’s back to the blues again. It’s safe to say he’s now graduated life’s university of music and is ready to pursue a Ph.D. in string wizardry.

With six albums under his belt and having recently mastered the art of singing, notice has been served to the likes of Warren Haynes, Robben Ford and Sonny Landreth, who now have a serious contender in their midst.

Mixing blues originals and covers, Bonamassa assembles a near-perfect portfolio, with Blind Faith’s title track as the centerpiece. On “The River,” he takes his cue from Led Zeppelin, crafting a Mississippi Fred McDowell-inspired epic that sounds like “When the Levee Breaks” meets “In My Time of Dying” meets “Voodoo Chile.”

Other highlights include the instrumental nod to Danny Gatton, “Revenge of the 10 Gallon Hat,” and the countrified “Around the Bend.”
