Town & Country
John-Alex Mason
Naked Jaybird

In between the electric and acoustic “Shake ’Em on Down” bookends, blues slide guitarist Mason halves the rest of his set into seven acoustic and then six electric songs. The entire album is performed solo, live in the studio, with no overdubs or tricks.

For the Country section, the award-winning, Colorado-based artist plays a National Style O resophonic guitar. Conversely, the Town tracks are played using a one-man-band rig of Danelectro or TeleStar guitars and footdrums (with the exception of “Jitterbug Swing,” played on the LoweBow – a cigar box guitar with three guitar strings and a bass string; check out Mason playing one on YouTube).

The Town sessions took place August 2006, and some of the material from them was released locally and on the Internet as the “Barefoot” EP. But Mason always had intended for the Town tracks to complement Country tracks on a full-length, and during 2007 wrote and recorded T&C’s acoustic component. Then it all was remixed and mastered in HDCD.

The selections are roughly a 50/50 mix of original and traditional/cover compositions (Robert Johnson, Skip James and Elmore James), but the new blends with the old so well that it all seems cut from the same cloth.
