Rock en Español, Vol. 1
Los Straitjackets
Yep Roc

This is sheer genius: Take one of America’s foremost instrumental rock combos; put ’em in the studio with the singer from one of the hottest rockabilly/Western-swing groups in the nation; and bring in a member of possibly the country’s greatest roots-rock outfit as producer.

Now, here’s where it really gets good: Have ’em do covers of Spanish-language covers of rock ’n’ roll standards from the late ’50s and early ’60s; let the producer sing a few; and feature one of the pioneers of the “East L.A. sound” as a guest vocalist.

Keep in mind that Los Straitjackets are not a Latino band – they’re a Nashville-based surf group. But that doesn’t stop them from performing these tunes with plenty of verve. Of course, having Los Lobos’ Cesar Rojas producing and Big Sandy (sans the Fly-Rite Boys) singing his heart out doesn’t hurt. And a couple of cameos by Little Willie G. (aka Willie Garcia), of Thee Midniters and Malo fame, is icing on the cake.

This is no novelty record, mi hermanos y hermanas.
