Push Comes to Shove
John Hammond
Back Porch

Hammond hooks up with self-proclaimed “ragmop” (blues/rap/hip-hop/whatever) artist G.Love (no space after the period, just like J.Lo!), which is in line with other unusual producers for Hammond (Tom Waits, David Hidalgo).

Surprisingly, it works well. There’s no hip-hop except for G.Love’s very limited tag-ons during the chorus of Sonny Thompson’s hit for Albert King, “I’m Tore Down.” The attitude here is slightly lo-fi, with an emphasis on performances that cut the crap and go straight to the chase. The big surprise is that Hammond wrote five of the tunes himself, all of which are good – not bad for a guy who usually chooses to merely interpret historical material in an academic manner.

The covers: Junior Well’s “Come On in This House”; Lightnin’ Slim’s “Mean Ol’ Lonesome Train”; Dion’s “If You Wanna Rock & Roll”; G.Love’s “Butter”; Little Walter’s “Everything Gonna Be Alright”; and Tom Waits’ “Cold Water.”

Forty-four years into his career, Hammond seems to be hitting his stride. Not exactly “44 Blues,” is it?
