Seth Walker
Pacific Blues

Walker’s a fantastic guitar player who also can write a good blues song in any of the genre’s subcategories, including jump, country, delta, R&B and soul.

His arrangements are uncluttered, and his band’s playing is unpretentious, featuring plenty of piano, electric piano and organ. His voice sometimes evokes Ray Charles, as on the original ballads “Steady” and “So Far Gone,” the Dave Bartholomew number “By the Water” or the Jimmy Reed cover, “I Know It’s a Sin,” featuring Kim Wilson on harmonica.

The lyrical highlight is “2' Left to the Ceiling,” about a Hurricane Katrina victim’s desperate but failed last stand to save his flooded house.

Three feet left to the ceiling
Nine feet above the floor
Sadie quit barking about an hour ago
And I can’t find my way to the door

Closing the album is an interpretation of Tom Waits’ melancholy “Picture in a Frame.”
