Other People's Lives
Ray Davies
V2
Davies still owes us three more solo albums, if he’s going to catch up with brother Dave. But the fact that he finally managed to pull off a record of his own is good news, indeed.
It’s been 13 years since the last Kinks studio album of all-new material, “Phobia.” In the meantime, only Dave has put out anything new (2002’s “Bug”), and after his near-fatal stroke last year, it seems any new Kinks album will be a ways off.
Ray, however, has made up for lost time with “Other People’s Lives.” With the recording done over the last three years, and some of the writing going back as far as the early ’90s, he’s certainly taken his time crafting this and it shows.
At first it seems strange hearing Ray’s voice backed by slick studio musicians rather than the rough-edged Kinks, but the listener quickly acclimates. It’s nothing but one great song after another, and those sharp, witty lyrics go down easy. Still, there are a few moments where one expects to hear Dave take a searing guitar solo or start singing those high backup vocals.
Highlights, besides the title track, include “Next-Door Neighbour,” “All She Wrote,” “The Tourist,” “Is There Life After Breakfast?” and “The Getaway (Lonesome Train).”
