Sixty Six Steps
Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon
Reprise

Kottke, besides being one hell of an acoustic guitarist, has an endearing offbeat edge to his music. One often can expect the unexpected, or at least a humorous if not slightly goofy take on the song at hand.

Hooking up in 2002 with Mike Gordon seemed like a natural, given the bass player’s background with the now-defunct goofy jam band Phish. The resulting CD was so refreshing that Kottke and Gordon decided to take another run at it – this time at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, with help from the studio’s renowned house drummer and percussionist, Neil Symonette.

The chemistry between the two is still there. Most of the songs have a slight Caribbean feel, and there are a few new covers, including Peter Green’s “Oh Well” and Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” both of which are guaranteed to bring a smile. Elsewhere, Kottke revisits songs he’s recorded before (Pete Seeger’s “Living in the Country,” Alex Harvey and Eddie Reeves’ “Rings” and his own “Twice”). Rounding out the disc are a live Phish staple (calypso group the Mustangs’ “Ya Mar”), three new songs from Kottke and five from Gordon.

While Kottke’s strength lies in instrumental music, only three of “Sixty Six’s” songs are wordless. The lyrics, however, make up for the less than stellar singing from the pair, as evidenced in this excerpt from Kottke’s “Balloon”:

When the violet drops you on the ground
That old familiar thud
Still the planets in the useful dark
Rise above the crud.
