Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
(Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
John Williams
Sony Classical

Twenty-eight years after he penned his soundtrack to the original “Star Wars,” John Williams calls it a wrap with the last installment of the six-part series.

Somewhat locked into previous themes to help viewers recall story lines, Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra (with occasional appearances by the London Voices) nonetheless spruce things up by integrating new material, foreshadowing the protagonist’s impending conversion to the Dark Side of the Force.

The original “Star Wars” theme gives way to “The Revenge of the Sith,” which sets an appropriately nefarious tone through ominous percussion and rapid-fire horns.

“General Grievous” pays homage to classic crime-jazz TV soundtracks such as “I Spy,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and especially the Lalo Schifrin-scored “Mission: Impossible.” Williams cut his teeth composing television soundtracks in the 1960s, and “Grievous and the Droids” bears a vague resemblance to his own “Lost in Space” theme.

Other highlights include the climactic trilogy of “Anakin vs. Obi-Wan,” “Anakin’s Dark Deeds” and “Enter Lord Vader,” peppered with staccato trumpets and accented by harp flourishes and synchronized violin plucking.

The final track, “A New Hope and End Credits,” briefly alludes to ’60s Western soundtracks, a subtle reminder that filmmaker George Lucas’ series is a cowboy epic set in outer space.
