Having seemingly slowed down from his rough and rowdy, party animal ways since marrying Dixie Chick Emily Erwin five years ago and becoming a dad two years ago, Robison creates a mature mix of inward-looking, hard-rockin’, sentimental, heartbreaking, double-entendre country/alt-country music.
Harmonica, fiddle, mandolin and accordion all figure into the equation at one point or another. Add the constant of producer Lloyd Maines’ steel guitar, dobro and lap steel as well as a nice selection of covers by Keith Gattis, Waylon Payne and Terry Allen, and it’s satisfaction guaranteed for any self-respecting lover of heartfelt, intelligent C&W.
Of course, none of this’ll be played on mainstream radio, and that’s a shame. But Robison will be the first to say, “Ask me if I care.” And he’s right, because country radio doesn’t play country music anymore.
Hey, we’re talking about the guy who told an audience of radio programmers to shut up during his set; the guy who called Brad Paisley a little moron; the guy who railed against best-selling artists delivering trendy “terminal disease songs.” Go Charlie!
